MSB Energy Associates - Air Quality and the Environment
MSB Energy Associates has been involved in air quality issues since our founding. We understand the economic and health impacts of air pollution. We have studied the options available to reduce air pollution from energy sources as well as the costs and impacts of those options. We have developed databases and models to help businesses, regulators and citizens understand and implement solutions.
|
Some examples of our experience include:
- Performing an electric vehicle emission analysis.
- Preparing a report on toxic air pollution as it affects the Great Lakes.
- Critiquing the air quality permitting process and proposed emissions controls on new merchant gas plants.
- Developing a comprehensive database for all US power plants, their emissions and economics.
- Using our database, along with Geographical Information System software, to identify local and regional health impacts of power plants.
- Supporting clients with analysis and testimony regarding proposed national and state regulation that would affect power plants.
- Analyzing the economic feasibility and air quality implications of converting coal plants to gas-fired generation.
- Representing organizations participating in the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) Summer Demonstration Project, which piloted trading of emission reductions for ozone precursors.

Project Spotlight
MSB provides technical support for the Clean Air Task Force, which coordinates a national campaign to bring older coal-fired power plants "grandfathered" under the 1977 Clean Air Act in line with modern pollution control standards.
MSB has developed a database for the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) that contains economic, technical and emissions information on all United States power plants. The database allows MSB to analyze historic and projected emissions for various pollutants from power plants and to advise the CATF about the effect of proposed regulations and market changes.
Weve supported the CATF with testimony before state regulatory agencies and weve produced information for the public, for decision makers and for state legislators and members of Congress for use in press conferences.
CATF has been successful, so far, in getting the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York to commit to controls on older plants far greater than present national mandates.
