MSB Energy Associates - Power System Planning

Since the founding of MSB Energy Associates, an important focus of our work has been power system planning. MSB’s founders have a long history of performing power system planning for the regulatory community. While interest in power system planning had declined with impending restructuring, reliability concerns have led to a resurgence. MSB has been working on power planning issues which have developed from this resurgence.

Project Spotlight

MSB has assisted the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), in cooperation with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), to identify opportunities for distributed resources to relieve stress on distribution feeders in Chicago. MSB helped identify distribution problem areas and developed cost estimates for improvements.

These estimates were used for comparison to energy efficiency and load management options. In a unique community effort, ComEd and CNT will collaboratively work with customers to enhance system reliability and reduce their costs.

MSB is helping CNT screen cost-effective demand-side measures to develop a business plan and program.

Our experience includes:

Reviewing utility system plans and contracts.

Developing alternatives to utility plans.

Developing planning guidelines for regulatory organizations.

Analyzing the costs and impacts of power system plans.

Analyzing nuclear repair and replacement options.

Addressing distribution reliability concerns through the use of distributed resources.

Identifying distributed resource alternatives to transmission.

Developing avoided transmission and distribution costs on an area specific basis.
